Chinoiserie is actually a broad term used to describe the Western interpretation of Chinese styles in art, furniture, and other design elements that was popularized in the 1700s and 1800s. In interior design you’ll see chinoiserie come through in furniture, wallpaper, ceramics, and more.
Wallpaper is one of the most common ways that we experience chinoiserie in interior design today. Most times it’ll include branches, trees, flowers, birds, and other animals, giving the perfect fairytale wonderland vibes. You’ll usually see them in light and bright colors and when an entire room is enveloped in them it creates a truly special space.
Drawbacks to chinoiserie wallpaper
However, a big drawback to most chinoiserie wallpapers that you’ll find available is the cost. They get quite pricey, and rightfully so as some brands carefully hand paint the wallpapers on high-quality coverings.
Another drawback is that maybe you’re not ready to commit to either the labor or cost of having them installed. Perhaps you also want to tone down the drama that they add.
An intermediate step between full room wallpapering is just doing an accent wall of the wallpaper.
